Traffic & Income Report – September, 2016

A little later than usual due to my Mega Planning Weekend, but September’s Traffic & Income Report is finally here! September was a busy month for me since I finally got back into the full swing of things after that summer slump. I’m excited to share my blog numbers with you today.!

If you are just tuning in to my monthly reports, let me set the stage for you a bit. I decided to start sharing my traffic and income from the very beginning for two reasons:

  1. I knew that it would be a great way for me to hold myself accountable. When the first of the month rolls around, it’s time for me to crunch my numbers and really analyze what is working and what is not with my business. The goal setting that I’ve included in these reports also helps me to stay on track and maintain a focus that I really didn’t have before.
  2. The second reason is that I hope to inspire other newbie bloggers in the way that I have been inspired. I’m hugely obsessed with reading other bloggers’ income reports and learning how they gain traffic, engage their audience, and above all: how they make money online.

It's time for September's Traffic & Income report! I've been doing these reports from the very beginning, back when my blog was making ZERO money. It's my hope that watching the progress of the Boho Berry Blog will help you to design your own blog as well :)

A few things to note before we begin:

  • I started the Boho Berry Blog back in April of 2015. I started recording my traffic and income in June 2015.
  • I don’t have (nor will I ever have) Google Adsense or any other ad networks on my blog. I don’t like ads on blogs, and I don’t believe that most of them are a good fit for my brand. The only brands or companies that I will advertise on my blog are ones that I have used myself and 100% endorse.
  • Some months, I will write a short “spotlight” review for one of the ways that I used to generate income that month. I’ll talk about things like how easy (or hard) it was to sign up, what kind of technical issues I faced (since I’m such a dweeb at these things!), and their payout policy, etc.
  • At the end of every monthly traffic and income report, I’ll have a goal-setting section. I’ll be reviewing my previous month’s goals and setting new ones for the next month.

Let’s get on with the fun stuff now, shall we?

September traffic remained pretty steady compared to August. And if I’m being completely honest, I’m totally ok with that! It’s such a pleasure to me to see people coming back for more month after month, as well as welcoming new folks to Boho Berry in the process.

September Traffic Overview - Boho Berry

  • Pageviews: 617,650 (up 3,838 or 1% from August)
  • Users: 241,269 (down 16,022 or 6% from August)
  • Sessions: 372,295 (down 12,000 or 3% from August)
  • Average Session Duration: 1.55 (up 0:11 from August)
  • Bounce Rate: 73.58 (down 2.03% from August)
  • Highest Traffic Day: 27,156 Pageviews (September 2nd)

Let’s take a look at where all of that traffic came from:

September Traffic Overview - Boho Berry

  1. Organic Search: I’m excited to see this number on the rise each month! This means that more and more people are finding me through Google searches and the like. Boho Berry is consistently ranking in the top 10 search results for my top keywords, and that is awesome!
  2. Social Media: Social Media accounted for 32% of Boho Berry’s overall traffic this month. (More on that below)
  3. Direct Traffic: Direct Traffic includes anyone visiting by typing my URL into their browser, or by clicking through from having me in their bookmarks.
  4. Referral: Referrals are all of the traffic I get from other sites linking in to my blog/blog posts. I feel so honored that so many of you have found my content useful enough to link to it within your own blog posts! You know who you are, and you freaking rock!
  5. Email: Email traffic stems from me creating a home base for all of my printable freebies right here on the blog. If you’re a Tribe Member, you gain access to the Tribe Resource Library — a top secret, password-protected page on the blog. This has allowed me to send traffic back to my blog from my email list instead of sending them off to Google Docs for the downloads.

Let’s dive deeper into Social Media next:

September Social Media Traffic - Boho Berry

Pinterest remains, as always, my top source of social traffic. After noticing a decline in Pinterest traffic for a couple of months due in part to some algorithm changes that Pinterest rolled out on February 1st, I’m happy to see those numbers back on the rise!

Facebook comes in at #2. I’ve been trying to make a more concerted effort on Facebook, and the addition of the Tribe Facebook Group back in May has definitely made it one of my new favorite places to be online. My follower count over there has been on a massive increase lately, which means that a lot of “my people” are still very avid Facebook users.

Instagram is finally showing up as a traffic source in Google Analytics! Can we all pause to celebrate for a moment? Woohoo! Interestingly, although Instagram is definitely where I have the most followers, it’s only my 3rd highest traffic source. I do think that with my renewed posting schedule here on the blog I’ll be seeing this number on the rise very soon!

A Note About Instagram:

You may (or may not) have noticed that I no longer use my Instagram Landing Page in my Instagram bio.

The whole reason I decided to create it in the first place was to track Instagram traffic back when Google Analytics treated Instagram as direct traffic. Since Google Analytics now recognizes Instagram as a traffic source, I didn’t see the need to keep the landing page.

In addition to the Google changes, I recently (in October) switched my Instagram from a personal page to a business page. This has allowed me access to Instagram’s analytics feature, which I truly love!

Feel free to click on the images above to see them up close!

* Note: The data pictured above is NOT from September, as I just recently made the switch to a business profile. I’ll have some more in-depth Instagram insights for you in next month’s report :)

Audience Demographics:

age gender

Here’s a fun little bit of data that a lot of you have been requesting over the past few months! Unsurprisingly, Boho Berry is more popular with women than men… but that male percentage has actually been on the rise as of late — up 2% from last month alone!

As far as age ranges go, those in my age range (25-34) seem to be the most engaged, followed closely by 18-24 year olds.

Boho Berry Tribe:

September Tribe Growth - Boho Berry

The Boho Berry Tribe (my email list) grew to a whopping 30,268 during the month of September! I welcomed almost 4,000 new Tribe Members last month!

I just love watching these numbers grow each month, and I’m especially honored that so many of you are welcoming me into your inbox each month. The conversations and friendships that have grown from my bi-weekly emails never cease to amaze me!

I think it’s important to note that the majority of my top posts are consistently some of my oldest posts on the blog. To me, this is evidence that taking the time to create “evergreen” content for your blog is key. These are the posts that bring new eyes to the blog, and hopefully keep them coming back for more.

Back in May, I asked you for your opinion on whether or not I should count my Etsy shop income as a part of my monthly income & traffic reports. You shared great arguments in both directions, but ultimately I’ve decided to keep my shop income separate from these monthly reports.

I will, however be sharing a snapshot of my stats for each month right here.

The decision to not share my income did not come lightly. While I believe in full transparency when it comes to the blogging side of my business, I feel it’s important to maintain some financial privacy with my storefront.

A new addition to my Etsy stats each month is this handy report from Craftybase. Craftybase is the software that I use to keep track of my Etsy inventory as well as my materials and supplies. I love this report because it tells me at a glance what my top sellers are. This helps me to forecast future sales and plan future new products for the shop.

Ok y’all! I might have set my goals a little high for the month of September. That being said, I’d rather fall a little short on a BIG goal than crush a mediocre one ;)

  1. Launch at least 5 new products in the shop. Nailed it!
  2. Stick to my new posting schedule (Blog 3x/week & YouTube 2x/week) I was close!
  3. Hire my first local employee (details to come soon!) ;) Struggling with some technical difficulties on this one (i.e. I might have to wait until we move in the near future)

So there you have it! I’m excited to continue these posts on a monthly basis to keep you posted on my growth. In addition, I think these traffic and income report posts will be really great to look back on when I’m trying to figure out what is working for me and what I might need to ditch.

I’d love to hear from you in the comments below! What did you like/not like about this post? Are there any other traffic and income report stats that you think would be useful for me to track?
