Traffic & Income Report – August, 2016

Back in June, when I published my last Traffic & Income Report, I talked a bit about how the change in my posting schedule had a large impact on my traffic for the month of May. That trend definitely held true for the remainder of the Summer while I posted less and less due to my travels.

Although I didn’t post a monthly report for June or July, here’s a couple or screenshots to give you a general overview of how those months went: (you can click to enlarge them)

June Traffic July Traffic

Although I didn’t post much in August either, the blog saw a slight upswing anyway. I’m excited to dive in to this month’s report and dissect the data for you!

If you are just tuning in to my monthly reports, let me set the stage for you a bit. I decided to start sharing my traffic and income from the very beginning for two reasons:

  1. I knew that it would be a great way for me to hold myself accountable. When the first of the month rolls around, it’s time for me to crunch my numbers and really analyze what is working and what is not with my business. The goal setting that I’ve included in these reports also helps me to stay on track and maintain a focus that I really didn’t have before.
  2. The second reason is that I hope to inspire other newbie bloggers in the way that I have been inspired. I’m hugely obsessed with reading other bloggers’ income reports and learning how they gain traffic, engage their audience, and above all: how they make money online.

It's been a couple of months since I posted an updated traffic and income report. Looking forward to diving back in :)

A few things to note before we begin:

  • I started the Boho Berry Blog back in April of 2015. I started recording my traffic and income in June, 2015.
  • I don’t have (nor will I ever have) Google Adsense or any other ad networks on my blog. I don’t like ads on blogs, and I don’t believe that most of them are a good fit for my brand. The only brands or companies that I will advertise on my blog are ones that I have used myself and 100% endorse.
  • Some months, I will write a short “spotlight” review for one of the ways that I used to generate income that month. I’ll talk about things like how easy (or hard) it was to sign up, what kind of technical issues I faced (since I’m such a dweeb at these things!), and their pay-out policy, etc.
  • At the end of every monthly traffic and income report, I’ll have a goal-setting section. I’ll be reviewing my previous month’s goals and setting new ones for the next month.

Let’s get on with the fun stuff now, shall we?

Site traffic in August remained pretty steady all month long, with only a couple of small peaks throughout the month. With daily pageviews hovering in the 20-28k range, I’m very happy with the way the month turned out even with my limited posting schedule.

Traffic Overview

  • Pageviews: 613,812 (up 59,744 or 10% from July)
  • Users: 257,291 (up 33,715 or 15% from July)
  • Sessions: 384,295 (up 42,451 or 12% from July)
  • Average Session Duration: 1.44 (down 0:03 from July)
  • Bounce Rate: 75.61 (up 0.12% from July)
  • Highest Traffic Day: 28,447 Pageviews (August 29th)

Let’s take a look at where all of that traffic came from:

All Traffic

  1. Organic Search: I’m excited to see this number on the rise each month! This means that more and more people are finding me through Google searches and the like. Boho Berry is consistently ranking in the top 10 search results for my top keywords, and that is awesome!
  2. Social Media: Social Media accounted for 35% of Boho Berry’s overall traffic this month. Being featured on Buzzfeed not once, but twice during the month of August definitely helped my social media numbers this month.
  3. Direct Traffic: Direct Traffic includes anyone visiting by typing my url into their browser, or by clicking through from having me in their bookmarks.
  4. Referral: Referrals are all of the traffic I get from other sites linking in to my blog/blog posts. I feel so honored that so many of you have found my content useful enough to link to it within your own blog posts! You know who you are, and you freaking rock!
  5. Email: Email traffic stems from me creating a home base for all of my printable freebies right here on the blog. If you’re a Tribe Member, you gain access to the Tribe Resource Library — a top secret, password-protected page on the blog. This has allowed me to send traffic back to my blog from my email list instead of sending them off to Google Docs for the downloads.

Let’s dive deeper into Social Media next:

Social Traffic

Pinterest remains, as always, my top source of social traffic. After noticing a decline in Pinterest traffic for a couple of months due in part to some algorithm changes that Pinterest rolled out on February 1st, I’m happy to see those numbers back on the rise!

Facebook comes in at #2. I’ve been trying to make a more concerted effort on Facebook, and the addition of the Tribe Facebook Group back in May has definitely made it one of my new favorite places to be online. My follower count over there has been on a massive increase lately, which means that a lot of “my people” are still very avid Facebook users.

Instagram is finally showing up as a traffic source in Google Analytics! Can we all pause to celebrate for a moment? Woohoo! Interestingly, although Instagram is definitely where I have the most followers, it’s only my 3rd highest traffic source. I do think that with my renewed posting schedule here on the blog I’ll be seeing this number on the rise very soon!

Audience Demographics:

Here’s a fun little bit of data that a lot of you have been requesting over the past few months! Unsurprisingly, Boho Berry is more popular with women than men… but that male percentage has actually been on the rise as of late!

As far as age ranges go, those in my age range (25-34) seem to be the most engaged, followed closely by 18-24 year olds.

Boho Berry Tribe:

Email Signups

The Boho Berry Tribe (my email list) grew to a whopping 27,057 since my last report back in May! I welcomed 4,000+ new Tribe Members last month, making August the largest growth month in history for Boho Berry.

I just love watching these numbers grow each month, and I’m especially honored that so many of you are welcoming me into your inbox each month. The conversations and friendships that have grown from my bi-weekly emails never cease to amaze me!

Back in May, I asked you for your opinion on whether or not I should count my Etsy shop income as a part of my monthly income & traffic reports. You shared great arguments in both directions, but ultimately I’ve decided to keep my shop income separate from these monthly reports.

I will, however be sharing a snapshot of my stats for each month right here.

See that huge spike around the middle of the month? That is when I came home from vacation and sent out a reminder email to the Tribe that their 30% off coupon would be expiring soon… Talk about a busy couple of days!

The decision to not share my income did not come lightly. While I believe in full transparency when it comes to the blogging side of my business, I feel it’s important to maintain some financial privacy with my storefront.
