Traffic & Income Report – April, 2016

It’s time for another monthly Traffic & Income Report! April was a bit on the hectic side for Boho Berry (and May doesn’t show any sign of slowing down), but overall I’m very happy with how the month went. You’ll notice that my traffic dropped (yet again), but I’ll explain why I’m OK with that here in a bit.

April was a month of new opportunities. A lot of my month was spent traveling, making connections, and planting a lot of little seeds. I’m looking forward to the months ahead, and watching those seeds grow to fruition!

If you are just tuning in to my monthly reports, let me set the stage for you a bit. I decided to start sharing my traffic and income from the very beginning for two reasons:

  1. I knew that it would be a great way for me to hold myself accountable. I know that when the first of the month rolls around, it’s time for me to crunch my numbers and really analyze what is working and what is not with my business. The goal setting that I’ve included in these reports also helps me to stay on track and maintain a focus that I really didn’t have before.
  2. The second reason is that I hope to inspire other newbie bloggers in the way that I have been inspired. I’m hugely obsessed with reading other bloggers’ income reports and learning how they gain traffic, engage their audience, and above all: how they make money online.

A few things to note before we begin:

  • I started the Boho Berry Blog back in April of 2015. I started recording my traffic and income in June, 2015.
  • I don’t have (nor will I ever have) Google Adsense or any other ad networks on my blog. I don’t like ads on blogs, and I don’t believe that most of them are a good fit for my brand. The only brands or companies that I will advertise on my blog are ones that I have used myself and 100% endorse.
  • Some months, I will write a short “spotlight” review for one of the ways that I used to generate income that month. I’ll talk about things like how easy (or hard) it was to sign up, what kind of technical issues I faced (since I’m such a dweeb at these things!), and their pay-out policy, etc.
  • At the end of every monthly traffic and income report, I’ll have a goal-setting section. I’ll be reviewing my previous month’s goals and setting new ones for the next month.

Let’s get on with the fun stuff now, shall we?

TRAFFIC & INCOME REPORT – APRIL, 2016

APRIL TRAFFIC:

April’s traffic was down by about 18% overall from March. Although I’d much rather see that number go up, I’m actually more than happy with my numbers this month.

As I mentioned earlier, I spent a lot less time on blog content this month in order to focus my efforts in some other important areas (like collaborations, growing my email list, connecting with other bloggers & influencers, etc.)

Traffic Overview

  • Pageviews: 478,450 (down 105,773 or –18% from March)
  • Users: 144,046 (down 35,311 or -19% from March)
  • Sessions: 241,849 (down 61,081 or -20% from March)
  • Average Session Duration: 2:39 (down 0:02 from March)
  • Bounce Rate: 67.56% (down 0.71% from March)
    — a low bounce rate is a good thing!
  • Highest Traffic Day: 20,081 Pageviews (April 22nd)

While those big red numbers are a little disheartening, I have to remind myself why it happened:

  1. I spent much less time promoting the blog on social media this month.
  2. I didn’t put out as much content as usual because I was traveling a lot.

Let’s take a look at where all of that traffic came from, shall we?

All Traffic

  1. Social Media: Social Media only accounted for 29% of Boho Berry’s overall traffic this month. Further proof that not being as active on Social Media last month definitely cost me. I should point out here that “Social Media” does NOT include Instagram. It drives me absolutely bonkers that it works this way but alas, it does. 
  2. Direct Traffic: Anyone visiting from Instagram will count as Direct Traffic. Whether it be from links in my bio or links that they copy and paste into their browsers from my posts. In addition to Instagram, Direct Traffic includes anyone visiting by typing my url into their browser, or by clicking through from having me in their bookmarks. The fact that 34% of my traffic is Direct Traffic is something that I consider a big win. 
  3. Organic Search: I’m excited to see this number on the rise each month! This means that more and more people are finding me through Google searches and the like. Boho Berry is consistently ranking in the top 10 search results for my top keywords, and that is awesome!Queries
  4. Referral: This is another increase that I LOVE to see! Referrals are all of the traffic I get from other sites linking in to my blog/blog posts. I feel so honored that so many of you have found my content useful enough to link to it within your own blog posts! You know who you are, and you freaking rock! :)
  5. Email: This is a relatively new source of traffic for me. It stems from me creating a home base for all of my printable freebies right here on the blog. If you’re a Tribe Member, you gain access to the Tribe Resource Library — a top secret, password-protected page on the blog. This has allowed me to send traffic back to my blog from my email list instead of sending them off to Google Docs for the downloads.

Let’s dive deeper into Social Media next:

Social Media Traffic

Pinterest remains, as always, my top source of social traffic. That being said, I have been noticing a steady decline from Pinterest over the past couple of months. This may be due in part to some algorithm changes that Pinterest rolled out on February 1st, and may explain my overall traffic drop in February and March.

Facebook comes in at #2. I’ve been trying to make a more concerted effort on Facebook, even though it’s not my favorite place to hang out online. My follower count over there has been on a massive increase lately though… which means that a lot of “my people” are still very avid Facebook users.

Although Instagram is not on this list above, I can confidently say that it is my #3 top referrer to the blog. How do I know this? Well, I implemented an Instagram landing page at the beginning of March, and through a little sleuthing on Google Analytics, I was able to finally get some solid numbers on my Instagram traffic:

Boho Berry Tribe:

The Boho Berry Tribe grew by over 2,700 in the month of April, bringing the Tribe’s numbers up to 13,982 as of April 30th!

I just love watching these numbers grow each month, and I’m especially honored that so many of you are welcoming me into your inbox each month. The conversations and friendships that have grown from my bi-weekly emails never cease to amaze me!

Let’s talk about income for a minute. 

BBP-LogoIn the past, I have not included my Etsy earnings or expenses in my monthly reports. My jewelry shop wasn’t really tied to my blog in any way, so I didn’t really feel it was right to include that information here.

Now that Boho Berry Paperie is open, I’m starting to reconsider that decision. After all, Paperie was born out of my efforts here on the blog, and I feel like it directly correlates to my blog income.

So my question to you is: What do you think? Would it be useful to see my shop tied into these monthly reports starting next month?

  1. Complete site redesign to coincide with Etsy launch on May 1st.
    This one definitely got put on the back-burner. Opening a shop is a LOT of work, y’all! I don’t know what I was thinking when I thought I’d be able to do a blog redesign as well.
  2. Get my new printable shop ready to launch on Etsy on May 1st.
  3. Write ahead so that I can take more time off when my daughter is out of school this Summer.
  4. Grow Twitter followers from 4,337 to 5,500 SO close! 4,703

Let’s talk about goals for a moment.

While 3 out of 10 goals accomplished may not sound like much to brag about, I couldn’t be happier with the growth that Boho Berry experienced in April.

I’ve been setting much more ambitious goals lately, and I strongly believe that this is forcing me to push my limits each and every day. I could easily set a less daunting goal each month, but honestly I’m kind of liking these stretch goals instead.

  2. Get back to my regular posting schedule (Blog 3x/week & YouTube 2x/week)
  3. Host a Live Q&A for Tribe Members
  4. Grow Twitter followers from 4,703 to 5,500

  6. Grow Pinterest followers from 32,080 to 35,000
  7. Grow Facebook followers from 9,289 to 12,000
  8. Grow YouTube subscribers from 36,813 to 40,000
  9. Grow the Tribe from 13,982 to 16,000

So there you have it! I’m excited to continue these posts on a monthly basis to keep you posted on my growth. In addition, I think these traffic and income report posts will be really great to look back on when I’m trying to figure out what is working for me and what I might need to ditch.
