Traffic and Income Report – October, 2015

Holy cow, is it seriously November already?!? October flew by in the blink of an eye! In fact, this whole year has felt like one big high speed roller coaster… you know… the kind where you are holding on for dear life, scared out of your mind, but at the same time thinking “This is awwwesssoooommmeee!”

It feels like just last week that I was sharing September’s numbers with you. I’m happy to report that progress is still being made and things are looking up :)

If you are just tuning in to my monthly reports, let me set the stage for you a bit. I decided to start sharing my traffic and income from the very beginning for two reasons:

  1. I knew that it would be a great way for me to hold myself accountable. I know that when the first of the month rolls around, it’s time for me to crunch my numbers and really analyze what is working and what is not with my business. The goal setting that I’ve included in these reports also helps me to stay on track and maintain a focus that I really didn’t have before.
  2. The second reason is that I hope to inspire other newbie bloggers in the way that I have been inspired. I’m hugely obsessed with reading other bloggers’ income reports and learning how they gain traffic, engage their audience, and above all: how they make money online.

October's numbers are here! I've been doing these traffic & income reports from the very beginning, and I love reflecting on how my blog is growing. Won't you join me?

A few things to note before we begin:

  • I am totally in the baby stages of building this blog. I started the Boho Berry Blog back in April, 2015. I started recording my traffic and income in June, 2015.
  • I don’t have (nor will I ever have) Google Adsense or any other ad networks on my blog. I don’t like ads on blogs, and I don’t believe that most of them are a good fit for my brand. The only brands or companies that I will advertise on my blog are ones that I have used myself and 100% endorse.
  • Some months, I will write a short “spotlight” review for one of the ways that I used to generate income that month. I’ll talk about things like how easy (or hard) it was to sign up, what kind of technical issues I faced (since I’m such a dweeb at these things!), and their pay-out policy, etc.
  • Please note that I am NOT including any of the income that I make from selling my malas, boho bracelets and jewelry over at the Boho Berry Shop. For the purposes of this traffic and income report, I am only concerned with the income I make through the Boho Berry Blog.
  • At the end of every monthly traffic and income report, I’ll have a goal-setting section. I’ll be reviewing my previous month’s goals and setting new ones for the next month.

Let’s get on with the fun stuff now, shall we?

October Overview

As you can see, I didn’t have all of the crazy traffic spikes that I had in September. Instead, I got this beautiful steady flow of traffic all month long.

That lower part in the middle of the month? I call that my mid-month slump. I took a short break from social media and enjoyed some much-needed Kara time. You can see where my traffic spiked back up around the 25th when I started posting regularly again.

Breaking down the numbers, I still saw a steady increase over September which makes me a happy camper. The number of returning visitors has increased from 28% to 39% also… I see that as a HUGE win, as it means that people keep coming back for more :)

  • Pageviews: 70,514 (up 9,753 or 15% from September)
  • Users: 23,298 (down 275 or 1% from September)
  • Sessions: 35,107 (up 2,559 or 7.5% from September)
  • Average Session Duration: 3:01 (up 0:20 or 14% from September)
  • Bounce Rate: 63.74 (down 3.64% from September)
  • Highest Traffic Day: 3,395 Pageviews (October 2nd):

Let’s take a look at where all of that traffic came from, shall we?

Traffic Sources

Social media is still my top referrer… “Direct” traffic is still a very close #2 which is a combination of Instagram and other direct links into the blog like bookmarks and typing the link directly into the browser.

I am very excited about the increase in Organic Search & Referral Traffic (up 75% and 36% respectively).
Organic Search = People finding me through search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.)
Referral Traffic = Other bloggers/websites linking to my content (you know who you are and you rock!)

Let’s dive deeper into Social Media next:

Social Media Traffic

Pinterest finally took the lead this month as I have been predicting for a while now. In fact, my Pinterest traffic jumped by 71% in October! I owe most of that increase to my Bullet Journal photos being repinned like wildfire. I have also tried to be more active on Pinterest in general, so that really helped as well.

Facebook and Twitter were down considerably but that was something that I expected since I was not quite as active on social media in October.

Reddit hopped up to #3, which was surprising to me at first. I had never really explored reddit before, but after this post started bringing in tons of traffic I quickly headed over there, created an account, and have become active in several subreddits. I love the format and look forward to spending more time there in the coming months.

Here is a breakdown of my top posts form Social Media for the month of October. I love checking out this little gem of a report because it gives me a great idea of what posts are resonating with my readers and what type of content I should focus on most in the future:
