Traffic and Income Report – March, 2016

I’m sitting here in shock as I write this, unable to believe that a month has gone by already since my last Traffic & Income Report. March was a month of new and exciting things for me, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has in store!

If you are just tuning in to my monthly reports, let me set the stage for you a bit. I decided to start sharing my traffic and income from the very beginning for two reasons:

  1. I knew that it would be a great way for me to hold myself accountable. I know that when the first of the month rolls around, it’s time for me to crunch my numbers and really analyze what is working and what is not with my business. The goal setting that I’ve included in these reports also helps me to stay on track and maintain a focus that I really didn’t have before.
  2. The second reason is that I hope to inspire other newbie bloggers in the way that I have been inspired. I’m hugely obsessed with reading other bloggers’ income reports and learning how they gain traffic, engage their audience, and above all: how they make money online.

* This post contains affiliate links. In plain English, this means that I may receive a small commission (at no cost to you) if you subscribe or purchase something through the links provided. You will never see me post a link to a product or service that I haven’t used myself and love! (Learn more here)

A few things to note before we begin:

  • I started the Boho Berry Blog back in April of 2015. I started recording my traffic and income in June, 2015.
  • I don’t have (nor will I ever have) Google Adsense or any other ad networks on my blog. I don’t like ads on blogs, and I don’t believe that most of them are a good fit for my brand. The only brands or companies that I will advertise on my blog are ones that I have used myself and 100% endorse.
  • Some months, I will write a short “spotlight” review for one of the ways that I used to generate income that month. I’ll talk about things like how easy (or hard) it was to sign up, what kind of technical issues I faced (since I’m such a dweeb at these things!), and their pay-out policy, etc.
  • Please note that I am NOT including any of the income that I make from selling my malas, boho bracelets and jewelry over at the Boho Berry Shop. For the purposes of this traffic and income report, I am only concerned with the income I make through the Boho Berry Blog.
  • At the end of every monthly traffic and income report, I’ll have a goal-setting section. I’ll be reviewing my previous month’s goals and setting new ones for the next month.

Let’s get on with the fun stuff now, shall we?

Income & Traffic

March’s traffic was down by about 2% overall from February. Although I’d much rather see that number go up, I have to remind myself that 500K+ pageviews per month is nothing to sneeze at. It’s hard to keep that in perspective sometimes, but I think it’s important to try ;)

Overall Traffic

  • Pageviews: 584,223 (down 15,335 or 2% from February)
  • Users: 179,357 (down 3,996 or -2% from February)
  • Sessions: 302,930 (down 9,178 or -3% from February)
  • Average Session Duration: 2:41 (no change from February)
  • Bounce Rate: 67.56% (down 0.92% from February)
    — a low bounce rate is a good thing!
  • Highest Traffic Day: 23,380 Pageviews (March 1st):

Highest Traffic Day

Let’s take a look at where all of that traffic came from, shall we?

All Traffic

  1. Social Media: Social Media accounted for 49% of Boho Berry’s overall traffic this month. I should point out here that “Social Media” does NOT include Instagram. It drives me absolutely bonkers that it works this way but alas, it does.
  2. Direct Traffic: Anyone visiting from Instagram will count as Direct Traffic. Whether it be from links in my bio or links that they copy and paste into their browsers from my posts. In addition to Instagram, Direct Traffic includes anyone visiting by typing my url into their browser, or by clicking through from having me in their bookmarks.
  3. Organic Search: I’m excited to see this number on the rise each month! This means that more and more people are finding me through Google searches and the like. Boho Berry is consistently ranking in the top 10 search results for my top keywords, and that is awesome!
  4. Referral: This is another increase that I LOVE to see! Referrals are all of the traffic I get from other sites linking in to my blog/blog posts. I feel so honored that so many of you have found my content useful enough to link to it within your own blog posts! You know who you are, and you freaking rock! :)
  5. Email: This is a relatively new source of traffic for me. It stems from me creating a home base for all of my printable freebies right here on the blog. If you’re a Tribe Member, you gain access to the Tribe Resource Library — a top secret, password-protected page on the blog. This has allowed me to send traffic back to my blog from my email list instead of sending them off to Google Docs for the downloads.

Let’s dive deeper into Social Media next:

Social Traffic

Pinterest remains, as always, my top source of social traffic. That being said, I have been noticing a steady decline from Pinterest over the past couple of months. This may be due in part to some algorithm changes that Pinterest rolled out on February 1st, and may explain my overall traffic drop in February and March.

Facebook comes in at #2. I’ve been trying to make a more concerted effort on Facebook, even though it’s not my favorite place to hang out online. My follower count over there has been on a massive increase lately though… which means that a lot of “my people” are still very avid Facebook users.

Although Instagram is not on this list above, I can confidently say that it is my #3 top referrer to the blog. How do I know this? Well, I implemented an Instagram landing page at the beginning of March, and through a little sleuthing on Google Analytics, I was able to finally get some solid numbers on my Instagram traffic:

IG Traffic

Boho Berry Tribe:

The Boho Berry Tribe grew by over 2,500 in the month of March (that’s a 29% increase, y’all!), bringing the Tribe’s numbers up to 11,523 as of March 31st!

Monthly Tribe Growth

I just love watching these numbers grow each month, and I’m especially honored that so many of you are welcoming me into your inbox each month. The conversations and friendships that have grown from my bi-weekly emails never cease to amaze me!

I love welcoming new members to the Tribe every day, and it still blows me away how many emails I receive every single day thanking me for the content I’m putting out into the world!

It was great to see my income back on the up-and-up for the month of March! I haven’t crossed that $5K barrier quite yet but I’m so proud of my progress so far!

  1. Overhaul the sidebar to make it more useful and user-friendly.
I spruced it up a bit, but I’m planning a major site redesign in May so stay tuned!
  2. Get my new printable shop ready to launch on Etsy on April 1st.
I pushed the date back to May 1st… with all of the travel I was doing in March, it just wasn’t feasible to get it all done by April 1st.
  3. Broadcast live on Periscope at least 1x per week.
Yet again, I failed to act on Periscope. I did, however, hop onto Snapchat! My username there is bohoberry and it’s been SO much fun so far!
  4. Grow Twitter followers from 3,362 to 5,000
    So close! 4,337
  5. Grow Instagram followers from 38,496 to 50,000
    So close! 49,053
  6. Grow Pinterest followers from 18,885 to 30,000
26,595 is not “so close” but I’m still impressed with a 7K+ increase :)
  7. Grow Facebook followers from 5,922 to 7,500
    Nailed it! 8,035!
  8. Grow YouTube subscribers from 24,874 to 30,000
    31,638!!!! Y’all rock!
  9. Grow the Tribe from 8,968 to 12,000
    11,523… another “so close!”

Let’s talk about goals for a moment.

While 3 out of 10 goals accomplished may not sound like much to brag about, I couldn’t be happier with the growth that Boho Berry experienced in March.

I’ve been setting much more ambitious goals lately, and I strongly believe that this is forcing me to push my limits each and every day. I could easily set a less daunting goal each month, but honestly I’m kind of liking these stretch goals instead.

  1. Complete site redesign to coincide with Etsy launch on May 1st.
  2. Get my new printable shop ready to launch on Etsy on May 1st.
  3. Write ahead so that I can take more time off when my daughter is out of school this Summer.
  4. Grow Twitter followers from 4,337 to 5,500
  5. Grow Instagram followers from 49,053 to 58,000
  6. Grow Pinterest followers from 26,595 to 35,000
  7. Grow Facebook followers from 8,035 to 10,000
  8. Grow YouTube subscribers from 31,638 to 40,000
  9. Grow the Tribe from 11,523 to 15,000

So there you have it! I’m excited to continue these posts on a monthly basis to keep you posted on my growth. In addition, I think these traffic and income report posts will be really great to look back on when I’m trying to figure out what is working for me and what I might need to ditch.

I’d love to hear from you in the comments below! What did you like/not like about this post? Are there any other traffic and income report stats that you think would be useful for me to track?

Kara you need to get on Periscope. I’ve been following a few and then more as they invite you to others broadcasts but The advertising of their products in tutorials and goofy crafting scopes is def a smart move! Additionally, I’m thinking your numbers maybe down from your East Coast followers because the weather has warmed up tremendously and many of us are spending more time outside enjoying the sun and preparing our yards and flower beds. Just saying. Lol. Maybe another metric to consider. We love you and keep it coming!

    • I hadn’t even thought about the weather, Ingrid… that’s an entirely valid point. As far as Periscope goes, I’ll definitely be hopping on more often :)

  • Serena Buskness

Hi Kara! This is so helpful! Thank you for posting! I have been wanting to start a blog for a while now just unsure if I could do it or if it would even make it. You give me hope!

    • You’re so welcome, Serena! The main reason I do this each month is to show that it IS possible for others as well :)

      • Serena Buskness

I have been trying to figure out a domain name and then it’s all the fun stuff!! Do you have any tips for starting a blog or choosing the right domain ?

  • Hey Kara, I was wondering how RSS Feeders like Feedly are tracked for your numbers. I am looking at your stuff through Feedly probably 85% of the time and I’m curious! I love these posts and I love that you’re on Snapchat! Thanks for being you ;)

    • Thanks Emma! I think as long as you click through to the blog post then it counts as direct traffic. If you read the entire post within Feedly I don’t think it counts at all, but I would much rather people read the way they want to :)

  • Bridget

Hi, Kara: I have the same question as Emma. I have you saved on MyYahoo dashboard and I come to the blog through that portal 100%. I have you on Feedly as well, but I only use that is Yahoo is down. How is that counted?

    • From what I understand, that counts as direct traffic. :)

      • Bridget

Whew. I’m glad. I was a bit worried it wasn’t counted.

  • James Brooks

Wow Kara! You are KILLING it! Massive congratulations – you deserve to be kicking ass with the hard work you put in :)

    • Aw, thanks James! It’s a lot of hard work for sure but it’s SO rewarding! Thanks for being a part of it all :)

  • Melissa Hatcher

    So inspired!!! Congrats!!!

  • Carli Liles

    Hey Kara,
I work in internet marketing (I specialize in SEO). So I was wondering if you had Webmaster Tools set up for your blog? This, when coupled with Google Analytics, can give you even more information to help improve your online search visibility (like the search queries that your showing up for and which ones are actually bringing visitors to your site). Furthermore, it can help you to ensure that your site is set up to best communicate with search engines (Google) and follow all of their *stated* guidelines. If you’ve got any questions let me know :)

Also, I just started bullet journaling myself (I’m LOVING it) and you have been the biggest inspiration and guidance. Your videos are awesome, so very helpful!

    • Thanks for that, Carli! I haven’t set up Webmaster Tools yet (although it’s on my list). I’m always looking for new ways to analyze the numbers so that is SUPER helpful :)

  • Jami B

Super inspiring, Kara, as always! I’m impressed with how you’ve been able to grow your SM channels in just a year to these numbers – any tips on how you’re doing that? I’ve been blogging for years and my numbers just inch along… :) Thanks!

    • Thanks Jami! I’m actually putting together a course on Instagram growth based on the segment I taught at CreativeLive in March. I have lots of little tips and tricks that I’ve learned so I’m trying to wrangle them all in one place very soon!

  • Rebecca Epperson

I’m working on a project for school that involves creating a blog I might actually start if my research pulls out an idea that I’m passionate enough about. I’m so impressed with your transparency (and, well, everything) and how quickly you’ve built your business. Part of my research is about how I could possibly make money from this project.

So I guess I’m saying, thank you for posting this and for being transparent. If you have anything to add that would help me with my research stage, I’d love to talk to you about it. You might even see an email from me soon :)

    • Hi Rebecca! I love that you’re doing this as a project for school. If you have specific questions related to your project, feel free to shoot me an email. I’ll be happy to help if I can :)

  • cheekyattitude

I’ll echo all the thanks for your work and transparency – it is really quite motivational.

I’ve been wondering, where do you get the photos you use in posts like this. Obviously the bullet journal pictures are of your personal journal. But the ones you use to illustrate posts like this are wonderful. Did you hire a photographer and/or model? If you purchased them, can you share the info? Thanks so much.

  • Amanda Lopez-Acosta

Do you have a post on how to make income from blogging? I need help ;)

    • Not yet, but I’m planning a series for bloggers very soon :)

I am fascinated by your blog income reports. Thank you so much for being transparent and sharing this information. I am just beginning to look into creating blog income, and to see your stats is an invaluable resource. Namaste, Sarah.
