Traffic and Income Report – December, 2015

It feels like I say this every single month, but holy cow! December flew by! In fact, 2015 flew by faster than any year I can remember before! Between starting my Etsy shop, this blog, and now a YouTube channel… I have been one busy, busy girl!

One of my favorite parts about starting a new month (and now a new year!), is to sit down and review the past month. Goals are wonderful and all, but without constant review they are just ideas on paper.

I plan to do an entire post about goal setting for 2016 soon, so this month’s report will not be quite that broad, but I have set some achievable goals for the month of January at the bottom.

If you are just tuning in to my monthly reports, let me set the stage for you a bit. I decided to start sharing my traffic and income from the very beginning for two reasons:

  1. I knew that it would be a great way for me to hold myself accountable. I know that when the first of the month rolls around, it’s time for me to crunch my numbers and really analyze what is working and what is not with my business. The goal setting that I’ve included in these reports also helps me to stay on track and maintain a focus that I really didn’t have before.
  2. The second reason is that I hope to inspire other newbie bloggers in the way that I have been inspired. I’m hugely obsessed with reading other bloggers’ income reports and learning how they gain traffic, engage their audience, and above all: how they make money online.

Income & Traffic - December, 2015

A few things to note before we begin:

  • I started the Boho Berry Blog back in April, 2015 (9 short months ago). I started recording my traffic and income in June, 2015.
  • I don’t have (nor will I ever have) Google Adsense or any other ad networks on my blog. I don’t like ads on blogs, and I don’t believe that most of them are a good fit for my brand. The only brands or companies that I will advertise on my blog are ones that I have used myself and 100% endorse.
  • Some months, I will write a short “spotlight” review for one of the ways that I used to generate income that month. I’ll talk about things like how easy (or hard) it was to sign up, what kind of technical issues I faced (since I’m such a dweeb at these things!), and their pay-out policy, etc.
  • Please note that I am NOT including any of the income that I make from selling my malas, boho bracelets and jewelry over at the Boho Berry Shop. For the purposes of this traffic and income report, I am only concerned with the income I make through the Boho Berry Blog.
  • At the end of every monthly traffic and income report, I’ll have a goal-setting section. I’ll be reviewing my previous month’s goals and setting new ones for the next month.

Let’s get on with the fun stuff now, shall we?

Traffic Overview - December, 2015

Again, I was absolutely blown away by the growth that this “little” (can I even call it that anymore?!?) blog experienced in December! Boho Berry maintained a pretty steady pace throughout most of the month, hovering around that 10-11,000 pageviews/day mark for most of the month.

Then, right before Christmas my pageviews skyrocketed. Again, I can’t pinpoint an exact event that occurred except a few pins on Pinterest gaining more traction than usual.

This makes me happy for two reasons:

  1. My blog growth is not reliant on “big events” anymore like the traffic spikes I described back in August & September.
  2. Pinterest is doing exactly what I had been predicting it would do for the past few months… It is by far my top referrer to the blog (more on that in a bit).
  • Pageviews: 415,062 (up 210,847 or +103% from November)
  • Users: 140,643 (up 54,629 or +80% from November)
  • Sessions: 223,360 (up 107,440 or +92% from November)
  • Average Session Duration: 2:41 (up 0:11 or +8% from November)
    — this is great because it means folks are sticking around on my site longer!
  • Bounce Rate: 68.89% (down 1.42% from November)
    — a low bounce rate is a good thing!
  • Highest Traffic Day: 31,990 Pageviews (December 28th):

Highest Traffic Day

My highest traffic day was on December 28th. It still blows me away that over 14,000 people came to my blog on a single day! The cool thing to note in the above graphs is how many return visitors I’m getting. Seeing that green section of the pie chart grow every month warms my heart. It means that people are loving what they see and read enough to come back for more :)

Let’s take a look at where all of that traffic came from, shall we?

Traffic Sources

  1. Social Media: Social Media accounted for 49% of my overall traffic this month. I should point out here that “Social Media” does NOT include Instagram. It drives me absolutely bonkers that it works this way but alas, it does.
  2. Direct Traffic: Anyone visiting from Instagram will count as Direct Traffic. Wether it be from links in my bio or links that they copy and paste into their browsers from my posts. In addition to Instagram, Direct Traffic includes anyone visiting by typing my url into their browser, or by clicking through from having me in their bookmarks.
  3. Organic Search: I’m excited to see this number on the rise each month! (Up 159% from November!) This means that more and more people are finding me through Google searches and the like. Boho Berry is consistently ranking in the top 10 search results for my top keywords, and that is awesome!
  4. Referral: This is another increase that I LOVE to see! Referrals are all of the traffic I get from other sites linking in to my blog/blog posts. I feel so honored that so many of you have found my content useful enough to link to it within your own blog posts! You know who you are, and you freaking rock! :)

Let’s dive deeper into Social Media next:

Social Traffic Breakdown

Pinterest remains my top traffic source for the month of December, making up a whopping 35% of the total traffic to my site!

Facebook is a distant 2nd, but not an insignificant 2nd! Facebook traffic grew by over 64% from November to December, and I expect to see that number on the rise in the next few months. The biggest contributing factor here has been the rise in shares of my blog posts throughout several planning & bullet journal groups on Facebook. HUGE thanks to all of you who are out there sharing and spreading the word… you ROCK!!!

Boho Berry Tribe:

Let’s talk email! This is something that I haven’t really discussed at length here in my monthly reports, but it’s a metric that I have been following closely since day one!

I started the Boho Berry Tribe almost at the same time as I started my blog back in April. Not surprisingly, it has grown at almost exactly the same rate!

I love welcoming new members to the Tribe every day, and it still blows me away how many emails I receive every single day thanking me for the content I’m putting out into the world!

    • Thank you Erin! It’s been a wild ride for sure! I can’t wait to see what happens in 2016 either :)

  • Steven Von Gerlachter

You should enable Google Webmaster Tools to see what terms caused the increase in organic search. Best of luck in 2016!

    • Thanks Steven! I actually can see that in my Google Analytics under the “Acquisition > Search Engine Optimization > Queries” Tab… It’s a great way to track what keywords are bringing people in :) Here’s the snapshot to give you a better idea:

  • Martha G

I find this so interesting! Thanks for sharing all the analytics, I’ve always been curious how people make money from their blogs and YouTube. I found you after your bullet journal was shown on the bullet journal site and come back almost every day. I love what you are doing and have been so inspired by your work and ideas.

  • Ruby Naz

You are so amazingly talented and organized! You totally inspire me! Hoping to start practicing some things this year (like bullet journaling and learning Illustrator) so I can achieve more milestones with my blog :) thanks so much for sharing all this!

    • Thanks Ruby! Hopefully you’ve found some tidbits in these reports that will help you along the way :)

  • Ruby Naz

And yay you live in NJ! I’m up in northern NJ :) I went to RU for undergrad and grad school.

  • You are awesome Kara! Love all the success you’re having for all the hard work you put in. Can’t wait to see how you rock 2016!!! <3

  • Ashley Crowe

Love seeing this Kara!! It gives me so much hope and inspiration! I am going to create a 2016 like your 2015!! Thanks for sharing!!

  • Karli Kuharik

This is amazing! Congrats on earning that much with your passion. I can only hope to achieve something like this one day. I bet that huge after Christmas spike in traffic had a lot to do with people who have nice new blank bullet journals with pages to fill. I know as soon as I get mine in (amazon hates me and this is taking forever for some reason) I’ll be stopping by for some layout and inspiration myself! Happy New Year, Kara! I wish you the best in 2016 <3

    • You’re probably very right about that after Christmas spike :)

      Thanks so much, Karli!

  • Theresa Goodwin

Congratulations! You do an amazing job. I have a question – please forgive it’s been answered elsewhere. Do you have a time estimate that you spend on your blog per week?

    Keep up the awesome work!

    • Hi Theresa! One thing that I aim to do in 2016 is to keep a more accurate record of how much time I work per week. As far as writing posts, I can tell you that I spend between 3-6 hours on each post between writing, editing, photographing, and creating graphics.

The biggest time-factor though is responding to all of the email & blog comments. I’d say I spend on average 2-3 hours per day responding to questions and comments across the blog, YouTube, and all of my social media platforms.

Then you add in the time spent crafting social media posts, coming up with new ideas, filming & editing video… Let’s just say for now that it’s definitely a full-time job ;)

  • Miranda M. Nahmias

WOW! Awesome income, Kara! That’s so amazing. That’s almost exactly what I make at my IRL job. Hoping to one day become a full-time blogger/online small business owner. You’re such a great inspiration :) I’m definitely going to have to remember to check back next month! I love reading posts like this!

    • Thank you, Miranda! I love this series because it forces me to look back and reflect on each month. I’m so happy to finally be making a full-time income as the time I put in is definitely a full-time job (if not more). :)

  • Chelsea Husum

Kara, I am so glad I happened upon your blog! It is very beautiful and inspiring!! As a new blogger, what kind of tracking system or site do you use? I think I need to incorporate something like that eventually and I am not sure where to start. Also, do you use an app or specific program for your pictures and inserting the text over them? Thanks! I look forward to following you and thanks for inspiring me!! :)

    • Hi Chelsea! As far as tracking, I think you’re talking about tracking stats? I use Google Analytics to keep track of everything (that is where all those pretty report pictures come from). For images, I like to use to create and edit graphics for my blog. Hope that helps to at least point you in the right direction! :)

      • Chelsea Husum

Thanks Kara!! That’s funny, I got an account on Canva about a week ago but hadn’t checked it out yet. I appreciate the info!! Have a great day! :)

  • Wow, you have an incredible growth on your blog. I want to know your secrets! :D

    • Thanks Kelly! I share my secrets in these reports every month, but I might have a little something extra up my sleeve for my blogger readers here in the next few months, so stay tuned ;)

  • Maci

I need to tell you that you are a rocks star! I totally found your blog from someone else fangirling about you on a bullet journal FB page. I haven’t been following you for long (the first post I read was your Top 12 Bullet Journal Hacks) but LOVED you instantly. You were into all the things I’m into. Whole 30! KonMari! Finding your true calling! The list goes on. Your site is gorgeous and has become my internet “happy place” – and I truly adore and appreciate your authenticity. I’ve just started tuning into these blog updates as I’ve been working on getting one up and running myself, but was seeking a mentor of sorts and just hadn’t found “the one.” Seriously. You are doing it right! Thank you. :-)

    • Aw! Thanks Maci! Your comment means the world to me :)

  • Congrats on the awesome growth, Kara! I’m so happy to see you keep growing and makin’ bank doing what you love! :) I’ve been waiting for this report all week – it’s so motivating to a tiny blogger to see how far you’ve come!

    • Thanks Autumn! That’s my goal – to show others that it IS possible :) So happy you’ve found my reports helpful :)

  • Wow, what incredible growth! It’s definitely encouraging to see this knowing that you just started your blog last year. Nice work Kara!

  • Carly

I spent the entire day reading and re-reading these reports for the past 6 months that you have done them. Thank you so much and congrats on the growth! These reports are inspiring and very informative. Do you offer blog coaching? Also what do you use to get your Pinterest analysis?
Thanks again for these wonderful posts! They are so helpful.

  • Kelley Schulberg

Kara, you are my new spirit animal. I’m so doing the blog thing. Thank you SO much for being adorable and so transparent.

    • Haha, I don’t think I’ve ever been anyone’s spirit animal before but I kind of like it ;) Thanks for the encouragement, Kelley! :)
