25 Random & Quirky Things About Me

So I’m mixing things up today with something a little more personal! I realized the other day that a lot of my awesome readers probably don’t know very much about me personally besides what I shared on my about page. That makes me sad! I want you to know the REAL person behind this blog, so I decided to share a fun list of random and quirky things that you may not know about me.

I’ve been on this path lately to try to use my own voice and be super authentic when I’m writing my posts. In a way, this post is also a way for me to learn and discover that voice based on my past and my stories. Even though I just wrote a post about releasing yourself from your past, I think that there’s definitely something to be gained from looking back at all of the things that have made you who you are.

Enough with the deep philosophical stuff though. Let’s get on with the fun part, shall we?

25 RANDOM & QUIRKY THINGS ABOUT ME:

  1. My hair has had a life of its own.
It has been every color under the sun: Green, Blue, Pink, Purple, Red, Black, Blonde… My hair has also been cut super short for most of my life (I even completely shaved it off in the 10th grade and last Summer!). I’m in the process of growing it out for the first time in 5 years, and the process is grueling. Right now I’m in the “I really want to chop it all off!” phase.

Here's some hot pink hair for ya! That mischievous but handsome looking dude is my husband, Mark :)

  2. I’m all about the water!
I used to drink Diet Coke all day, every day. Last year I finally weaned myself off of caffeine and now drink nothing but water during the day. You’ll never see me without my 32 oz. pink Nalgene bottle.
  3. Things that I love:
The color green, going to the beach, float trips, BBQ’s with friends, going to St. Louis Cardinals’ baseball games, yummy dinners out at fancy restaurants, spending time with the sweetest 9 year old on the planet (my daughter, Bella), wineries, traveling to new places, making new friends (oh, hi there!), camping, and all things outdoors.
  4. I’m a big dork!
I do lots of dorky things. I love to knit and crochet (check me out on Ravelry). I enjoy playing video games, and I often get obsessed with a new game on my phone for months at a time. Anyone who ever dared to download Candy Crush feels my pain on that one, am I right? I like to read fantasy and sci-fi books. Oh, and I also geek out over office supply purchases!
  5. I’m a damn good cook.
Just ask my husband, he’ll confirm it! I grew up in the kitchen with my mom and my grandmother, and I’ve toyed with the idea of going to culinary school for years now. Not because I want to be a chef or own my own restaurant, but because the challenge sounds fun. The best meal I make is this linguine pasta with Italian sausage and a blushing cream sauce with the best cheese on the planet: Gruyere!
  6. I hate doing laundry.
Who doesn’t? But I really hate laundry! Oh, I don’t mind washing it, and I don’t mind putting it in the dryer. There’s just something that happens in my brain when it comes time to fold it all and put it all away… Seriously, you should see the pile of clean laundry that’s waiting for me upstairs right now… Eek!
  7. I love whiskey… oh, and beer!
No fru-fru drinks for this girl! I’m a beer and bourbon chick all the way. Take me to a good whiskey bar and tell me I can sample them all and I’ll be the happiest girl on the planet for the day :)
  8. Costa Rica
I lived in Costa Rica as a child for 6 years (from 9-15) and I loved it! My step-dad got a job there and they were some of the best years of my life. Yes, Costa Rica is as beautiful as they say it is, and the people are some of the kindest you will ever meet!
  9. I went to Catholic school
Speaking of Costa Rica, while I was there I attended a Catholic school for a couple of years. Although I’m not Catholic, it did give me a good understanding and appreciation of others’ religious beliefs.
  10. My biggest pet peeves:
Bad grammar, when people are rude to waitstaff (or to anyone really), unkept promises, Winter, when that one strand of hair just won’t do what I want it to, drivers who don’t use a turn signal, accidentally eating that nasty licorice jelly bean, mosquitos, when someone walks super slow in front of me, and red lights. P.S. Red lights LOVE me.
  11. I’m an INFJ
According to the Myers-Briggs personality test, I am an INFJ (“The Advocate”) which apparently is super rare. Some famous INFJ’s are Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Nicole Kidman, and Jimmy Carter. The description is scarily accurate!
  12. I consider myself to be Spiritual but not Religious
Although I was raised in the church and went to Catholic school, I don’t consider myself to be religious. I do believe in a higher power or “energy”, and I believe in doing good in this world while I’m here. I just don’t believe that any single religion has got it 100% right.
  13. My #1 fear is regret!
I’ve taken a lot of chances in my life. Some have turned out to be mistakes, but a lot of them also turned out beautifully. I want to live my life to the fullest. I don’t want to be lying on my death bed with regrets of not doing something that I should have done.
  14. My favorite movie:
My all-time favorite is When Harry Met Sally. I just love the story of two people who hated each other in the beginning eventually forming a friendship that lasted years and years before ultimately ending up together. Call me a hopeless romantic, but it just pulls at my heartstrings. Add in the awesome comedy, and I was hooked!
  15. I adore my dog!
My dog, Bentley is my best bud! Mark got her for me around Valentine’s day in 2014, and she has been my little love-bucket ever since! We had just moved to NJ, and Mark was about to leave for 6 months for training. Bentley was my buddy the whole time he was gone. We originally thought she was a Labrador / German Shepherd mix, but 1.5 years later she only weighs 45 pounds, so who knows!

Here's Bentley as a puppy! She was SO darn cute!

  16. I don’t mix well with horror movies
Horror movies scare the bejeezus out of me! I know that they’re supposed to and all, but I mean they really scare me! I’ll have nightmares for days. The only way I can watch a scary movie is if my Mark is home and we make sure to watch a funny movie (or two) before I go to sleep.
  17. I eat weird
I’m super OCD about how I eat certain foods. Apples? I have to eat around the core first, then the top, then the bottom. Skittles? I chew the outer coating off first and then eat the inside. I also eat my sandwiches in a pattern that is just too complicated to describe.
  18. Little Kara had big dreams
My dream job as a child was to grow up and be a famous actress/singer on Broadway. I went on to join choir and chamber singers in high school. To this day, I still love me some show-tunes, and I can’t wait to go see my first musical on Broadway soon!
  19. I hate being tickled
It doesn’t just annoy me. I actually despise the feeling of being tickled. What’s worse is I can’t help but smile and laugh the whole time, so no one believes me. Life is hard, y’all!
  20. My guilty pleasures:
Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream, Survivor, Cinnamon Toast Crunch (without milk, I like to snack on it like popcorn!), sappy romance novels, Orange Is The New Black, and tacos.
  21. I’ve moved around a lot!
I talked about living in Costa Rica already, but besides that, I have moved around a ton. I was born in Gainesville, Florida where I lived before and after Costa Rica. I moved to College Park, Maryland when I was 22, then Virginia Beach, then Cape Girardeau, Missouri where I lived for 7 years (the longest I have lived anywhere). I met my husband in 2012 and we moved to St. Louis in 2013. My latest home is here in South Jersey and I really do like it here so far (although I really, really, REALLY miss my friends).
  22. I have a lot of ink
When people first meet me I often get asked how many tattoos I have. In reality, it’s only 4, but 3 of them are huge. My whole right thigh is covered with a pirate ship with a banner that reads “Not all who wander are lost”. My left arm is covered with a cherry blossom branch with the quote “All good things are wild and free” in my own handwriting on the inside of my arm. My right arm is a work in progress but so far is a couple of mandalas and a sugar skull with roses. I also have a tiny tribal butterfly thingy on my right hip bone.

    My favorite tattoo! :)

  23. My travel bucket list:
The top 5 places I want to travel but haven’t had the chance yet are Bali (visited in 2017!), Italy, Maldives, Ireland, and Australia. One of these days I’m going to travel the world, and I can’t wait!
  24. I’m my husband’s biggest fan!
Mark is such an amazing husband, step-dad, Marine, and above all, he is my very best friend. There is nothing that I can’t talk to him about, and we have gotten through so much together since we met 3 short years ago. I’d follow this man anywhere! He’s my soulmate through and through! He accepts me for who I am even with all of my faults and quirks, and I couldn’t be luckier to have met him.
  25. My favorite food is Sushi
Seriously. I would be completely and utterly happy if all I could eat for the rest of my life was sushi. There’s just nothing as fresh and delicious in my book! I even learned how to make sushi at home, although it’s a lot of work and I much prefer eating it when a master sushi chef has made it for me.

Phew! I really shared a ton of stuff here, right? I hope you enjoyed getting to know me a little better today. I’d love to get to know YOU more too! So let me know:
