Every now and then, a quote comes into your life that just kind of sticks with you. This was the case for me when I heard Jim Rohn’s now-famous quote: “You are the combined average of the five people you spend the most time with.” What Jim was talking about was your circle of influence.
You circle of influence is the group of people that you surround yourself with on a regular basis. They are the people that influence your life, and those whose lives you influence in return.
I first heard Jim Rohn’s quote on Hal Elrod’s Achieve Your Goals podcast, and immediately had one of those proverbial “Aha!” moments.
The people that you surround yourself with on a daily basis can have a lasting impact on your life. They can rub off on you, pulling you up to a higher level. But the reverse can also be true — they can pull you down as well — so you have to be careful.
Constantly ask yourself how you are being influenced by others. Are you okay with that? Are the people around you positive and uplifting? Or are they negative and complaining?
As the saying goes: misery loves company… but so does success!
Don’t believe me? Check out this cool infographic from Maria Popova over at Brain Pickings:
Take a minute to evaluate your own circle of influence. Are the people you surround yourself with a reflection of who you aspire to be? Are they passionate? Are they goal-oriented?
If not, it might be time to consider upgrading your circle of influence. One of the best ways to do this is to think of the type of person that you want to be. What are some qualities that you aspire to? Seek those types of individuals out and start to connect with them.
At first, it might seem like a huge leap to start surrounding yourself with people that you look up to and admire. But I’m here to tell you that it can be done.
MY CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE
When I look back even six months ago in my own life, there were a few people that I admired:
1. Kim Alvarez (Tiny Ray of Sunshine)
I was new to the Bullet Journal community, and Kim was (and still is) a thought-leader within the community. I can specifically remember the first time she commented on one of my posts. I had a total and complete fangirl moment!
Fast-forward 6 months and Kim is my absolute best friend in the blogging world. We work closely together on a weekly basis, we cheer each other on, we bounce ideas off each other, and we nurture each other’s growth.
2. Lisa Jacobs (Marketing Creativity)
When I decided to take the leap back in April to open my Etsy shop, Lisa’s blog was one that I read religiously. I devoured her marketing tips and strategies. I admired her work ethic, her business principles, and the way that she teaches her readers and clients to market their creative businesses.
Through participating in her Luminaries Club, I was able to develop a working relationship with Lisa. Putting myself out there and being an active participant in the group opened the lines of communication.
Fast-forward 6 months and I am now her Operations Manager. I have the dream job of being able to work one-on-one with my favorite creative business consultant. I get to sit in on client calls, learn the back end of her business, and I’ll even be joining her live on stage at CreativeLive in March!
3. Ryder Carroll (BulletJournal.com)
Ever since diving head-first into the Bullet Journal community, Ryder has been one of my idols. He invented this amazing system, after all, and put it out so graciously into the world. It has changed the lives of thousands.
Never in a million years did I think that we would email each other on a regular basis, or that I would get to guest post for the Bullet Journal Blog. But here we are 6 months later doing just that.
4. Brian Goulet (The Goulet Pen Company)
When I delved into the world of fountain pens last November, Brian was the face that I watched in video after video on YouTube to learn all of the ins and outs of my newest obsession.
Through watching his videos, I soon realized that I not only respect him for his knowledge, but for the way that he and his family run their business as well. I respect his focus on educating his customers and building a community around his passion. I realized that his principles and values were on par with what I want to attract in my own life.
Fast-forward a couple of months, and not only did we team up to bring you that awesome giveaway last month, but there will be many more collaborations in the future as well. Brian even interviewed me for his new “Goulet Guests” series, and I can’t wait for it to go live next week.
I’ve looked up to these women as influencers and thought-leaders in the Bullet Journal community, and now I get to work with them on a regular basis through the challenges that we co-host along with Kim on Instagram each month.
I’m not telling you any of this to brag.
My point here is to show you the massive impact that your circle of influence can have on your life. By surrounding yourself with positive people that are successful in the ways that you want to be successful, you open yourself up to their influence. You open yourself up to growth and abundance.
A few months ago, I talked about how Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe. I’m sharing my circle of influence with you today as living, breathing proof of that statement.
How to Upgrade Your Circle of Influence
* The following list was taken directly from the Achieve Your Goals podcast, episode #17: How to Boost Your Circle of Influence, by Hal Elrod.
1. Identify specific people (or type of people) that you admire.
2. Find out what is important to them.
3. Figure out a way to support them.
4. Take action. Connect with them regularly.
5. Expect nothing in return. Simply nurture the relationship.
Ultimately, I think it’s important to remember that success takes time. Building and nurturing relationships take time. None of this will happen overnight.
It’s up to you to put yourself out there and start expanding your own circle of influence if you so desire, and it’s my sincerest hope that you found some useful tips here today to help you do just that.
