35 Acts of Kindness Before 35

35 Acts of Kindness Before 35

Well hello there! Did you miss me? Before I dive in today, I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to all of you for being so patient with me over the past couple of weeks. With my shop opening on May 1st, I’ve been in a bit of a frenzy over here trying to get over 300 orders out the door. Talk about being busy!

In any case, I’m happy to be back to “normal” for the most part, and I’m going to do my best to keep creating all of the yummy content you’ve come to love and expect around here.

I’m definitely still in the thick of things with the shop opening, but I thought I’d share this quick little post with you today anyway. Ready? Let’s go!

35 Acts of Kindness Before 35

A few weeks ago, I was sitting around thinking about aging. Come on, you know we all do this! I’ll be turning 35 next year, and I have SO much that I want to do while I’m still “young”. So, I started to think about all of the things that I still want to do in life, and how little time we all actually have when you sit down to think about it.

I don’t know about you, but when I get into a thinking session like this one, my mind tends to wander a bit. I knew that I wanted to create a 35 before 35 list, but I wasn’t quite sure how I wanted to do it.

Then it hit me.

Instead of a traditional list of random things to do, I decided to create a list of things that I could do for others! One area of my life that I’ve been trying to focus more on lately is contribution (see my Level 10 Life post to check out the other areas), and I see this list as the perfect way to stay on track in this area.

So without further ado, here’s my list!

35 ACTS OF KINDNESS BEFORE 35

  1. Pay for a stranger’s groceries
  2. Pay the bridge toll for the car behind me
  3. Support a small business
  4. Volunteer in my community
  5. Help a friend in need, no questions asked
  6. Donate used clothes
  7. Donate used books
  8. Compliment a stranger
  9. Leave a random “you are awesome” note
  10. Send letters to sick children
  11. Say thank you to someone who made a difference
  12. Donate to charity
  13. Be kind to myself when I make a mistake
  14. Pay for someone’ dinner
  15. Loan money through Kiva.org
  16. Teach a friend something new
  17. Cook dinner for a friend in need
  18. Make an introduction
  19. Buy a small gift for someone “just because”
  20. Hold the elevator
  21. Help someone with directions
  22. Leave a big tip
  23. Plant a tree
  24. Pick up trash in a public park
  25. Pay someone’s expired parking meter
  26. Put positive sticky notes around town
  27. Send dessert to another table
  28. Host a clean up party
  29. Send flowers to a friend
  30. Offer to babysit for a single mom
  31. Forgive someone and never bring it up again
  32. Say “I’m sorry” when I’m wrong
  33. Help a friend pack and move
  34. Give away a great book
  35. Hide money for a stranger to find

Once I finished writing out this list, I realized that I needed a good way to have this list with me at all times. So, I made a copy of it and put it in my purse so that it’s always there as a reminder (and so that I can mark things off as I go).

Every time I look at this list, it makes me smile. I’m excited to dive in and start checking these little acts of kindness off one by one.

How about you? Is there anything you would add to your own list? Let me know in the comments below!

  • I love this. It is such a good and kind thing to do!!

  • I carry mini post-it notes and a sharpie in my backpack and leave ‘you are beautiful’ notes on mirrors in public bathrooms.

  • This is so awesome! And timely. I was just on the Humans of NY page and was thinking about donating to the the Sloan Kettering Pediatric dept.

  • Love this. I’m all about spreading love, and this just makes my heart happy. <3

Thats so funny! I did 44 RAK’s before I turned 44 last month :) It made me feel really good seeing so many people happy.

  • Pamela Meyers

I love this idea! With me, 35 has come and gone! I turned 50 this past March. Someone asked if I had a Bucket List yet but I’ve always found the concept kind of maudlin. A Kindness List? Now, that’s something I can get behind. So, I guess I’ll be making a 55 (before 55) Random Acts of Kindness List. Kara’s list has given me a great deal of inspiration. Can’t wait to get started.

What about a 52 before 52 then you could do one a week for the year leading up to being 52?

      • Angela York

That is a really great idea Sally!!!!!

Lol! It’s wonderful to see someone my age on here. I just saw this so it will have to be a “56” random acts.

  • Kate

Love it! Would also love an update on Miracle Morning. I need the inspiration! :)

We do laundry at the laundromat and one of the 80lb washers has a feature where the 40th load is only 25 cents (vs. $8 – $11). Whenever we hit the laundromat jackpot and get the 25 cent wash, we give our quarters to someone else in the laundromat. This has happened a few times – it’s so fun!!

I’m in the same boat as Pamela – 35 is in my rear view mirror and 50 is careening at me head on this coming January. I like the idea of 55 before 55. I’ll have to sit down and make a list of random acts of kindness, maybe leaving a few blanks in case inspiration hits in the moment. :)

What a great idea. I’ll be 45 in a month so it’s a little too late to do 45 by 45 so I am going to create a 50 by 50. Thank you for the inspiration.

  • Wow there are so many wonderful ideas I would have never thought about! That shows you’re a beautiful human being! Thank you for the inspiration ! Sometimes, when you want to help someone, you think you need to do one big thing or offer one very expensive gift. However, I’m sure these little gestures will brighten up someone’s day even more than some material gift! I’ll make sure to use some of these ideas!

  • Lily Unicorn

That is so cool, You’ve inspirered me to do more nice things!

  • Oh, I love this idea! I’ll definitely be taking ideas from this list for my own kindness list!

I did the hidden money thing once for the girl who took care of my cats when I traveled. Stuck it in a book I gave her. It was very cool. When I saw her sometime later she just hugged me with tears in her eyes.
