Traffic & Income Report – October, 2016

October Traffic & Income

Hi, lovelies! This month is already flying by, and I’m in a frenzy of activity behind the scenes here preparing for what’s sure to be a busy holiday season.  With the beginning of a new year so close at hand, it has caused me to do some reflecting on the things that are and are not working here at Boho Berry.

One of the things that has been on my mind as of late is whether or not I should continue to do these monthly traffic and income reports. While I, personally, love them and get a kick out of analyzing my numbers, I feel like the reports themselves have gotten a little stale.

If you are just tuning into my monthly reports, let me set the stage for you a bit. I decided to start sharing my traffic and income from the very beginning for two reasons:

  1. I knew that it would be a great way for me to hold myself accountable. When the first of the month rolls around, it’s time for me to crunch my numbers and really analyze what is working and what is not with my business. The goal setting that I’ve included in these reports also helps me to stay on track and maintain a focus that I really didn’t have before.
  2. The second reason is that I hope to inspire other newbie bloggers in the way that I have been inspired. I’m hugely obsessed with reading other bloggers’ income reports and learning how they gain traffic, engage their audience, and above all: how they make money online.

That being said, I’ve come to the conclusion that these monthly reports have served their purpose and are no longer necessary. My main goal was to show my journey from a baby blog making absolutely nothing to a successful income-producing one.

I’m happy that I’ve been successful in that goal, but I also feel that now that I’ve achieved it, continuing to share them on a monthly basis is becoming a bit redundant.

So, with that in mind, I have decided that this month will be my very last Traffic & Income Report. All of my past reports will still live here on the blog with the intention of helping others as they embark on their own journeys in the blogging world.

Thank you to each and every one of you for your encouragement along the way!!!

A few things to note before we begin:

  • I started the Boho Berry Blog back in April of 2015. I started recording my traffic and income in June 2015.
  • I don’t have (nor will I ever have) Google Adsense or any other ad networks on my blog. I don’t like ads on blogs, and I don’t believe that most of them are a good fit for my brand. The only brands or companies that I will advertise on my blog are ones that I have used myself and 100% endorse.
  • Some months, I will write a short “spotlight” review for one of the ways that I used to generate income that month. I’ll talk about things like how easy (or hard) it was to sign up, what kind of technical issues I faced (since I’m such a dweeb at these things!), and their payout policy, etc.
  • At the end of every monthly traffic and income report, I’ll have a goal-setting section. I’ll be reviewing my previous month’s goals and setting new ones for the next month.

Let’s get on with the fun stuff now, shall we?

TRAFFIC & INCOME REPORT – OCTOBER, 2016

OCTOBER TRAFFIC:

October’s traffic was relatively steady all month long, which seems to be the theme of the past few months. You’ll notice a pretty steep decline in overall traffic from last month, but I was expecting that. I’ve been focusing much more of my energy on creating video content on my YouTube channel, and using the blog mainly as a supplement to those videos.

October Traffic Overview

  • Pageviews: 538,107 (down 79,543 or 12% from September)
  • Users: 205,872 (down 35,397 or 14% from September)
  • Sessions: 317,483 (down 54,812 or 14% from September)
  • Average Session Duration: 1.59 (up 0:04 from September)
  • Bounce Rate: 73.05 (down 0.53% from September)

Let’s take a look at where all of that traffic came from:

Traffic Sources

  1. Organic Search: I’m excited to see this number on the rise each month! This means that more and more people are finding me through Google searches and the like. Boho Berry is consistently ranking in the top 10 search results for my top keywords, and that is awesome!
  2. Social Media: Social Media accounted for 32% of Boho Berry’s overall traffic this month. (More on that below)
  3. Direct Traffic: Direct Traffic includes anyone visiting by typing my URL into their browser, or by clicking through from having me in their bookmarks.
  4. Referral: Referrals are all of the traffic I get from other sites linking into my blog/blog posts. I feel so honored that so many of you have found my content useful enough to link to it within your own blog posts! You know who you are, and you freaking rock!
  5. Email: Email traffic stems from me creating a home base for all of my printable freebies right here on the blog. If you’re a Tribe Member, you gain access to the Tribe Resource Library — a top secret, password-protected page on the blog. This has allowed me to send traffic back to my blog from my email list instead of sending them off to Google Docs for the downloads.

Let’s dive deeper into Social Media next:

Social Media Traffic

Pinterest remains, as always, my top source of social traffic. After noticing a decline in Pinterest traffic for a couple of months due in part to some algorithm changes that Pinterest rolled out on February 1st, I’m happy to see those numbers back on the rise!

Facebook comes in at #2. I’ve been trying to make a more concerted effort on Facebook, and the addition of the Tribe Facebook Group back in May has definitely made it one of my new favorite places to be online. My follower count over there has been on a massive increase lately, which means that a lot of “my people” are still very avid Facebook users.

Instagram is finally showing up as a traffic source in Google Analytics! Can we all pause to celebrate for a moment? Woohoo! Interestingly, although Instagram is definitely where I have the most followers, it’s only my 3rd highest traffic source. I do think that with my renewed posting schedule here on the blog I’ll be seeing this number on the rise very soon!

Audience Demographics:

October Demographics

Here’s a fun little bit of data that a lot of you have been requesting over the past few months! Unsurprisingly, Boho Berry is more popular with women than men… but that male percentage has actually been on the rise as of late!

As far as age ranges go, those in my age range (25-34) seem to be the most engaged, followed closely by 18-24-year-olds and 35-44-year-olds.

Boho Berry Tribe:

October Tribe Growth

The Boho Berry Tribe (my email list) grew to a whopping 33,261 during the month of October! I welcomed almost 3,000 new Tribe Members last month!

I just love watching these numbers grow each month, and I’m especially honored that so many of you are welcoming me into your inbox each month. The conversations and friendships that have grown from my bi-weekly emails never cease to amaze me!

I think it’s important to note that the majority of my top posts are consistently some of my oldest posts on the blog. To me, this is evidence that taking the time to create “evergreen” content for your blog is key. These are the posts that bring new eyes to the blog, and hopefully keep them coming back for more.

ETSY STATS:

Back in May, I asked you for your opinion on whether or not I should count my Etsy shop income as a part of my monthly income & traffic reports. You shared great arguments in both directions, but ultimately I’ve decided to keep my shop income separate from these monthly reports.

I will, however, be sharing a snapshot of my stats for each month right here.

Etsy Snapshot

The decision to not share my income did not come lightly. While I believe in full transparency when it comes to the blogging side of my business, I feel it’s important to maintain some financial privacy with my storefront.

Top 10 Products

A new addition to my Etsy stats each month is this handy report from Craftybase. Craftybase is the software that I use to keep track of my Etsy inventory as well as my materials and supplies. I love this report because it tells me at a glance what my top sellers are. This helps me to forecast future sales and plan future new products for the shop.

Congratulations!! I think these are great results. I understand your desire not to continue sharing your income, I am going to miss it, but I understand. I have a question, why do you pay such an expensive Hosting? My website (in Spanish) used to have 1.6 million visitors and I never paid such a high amount.

  • Congrats in this iniciative. I’m from Brazil and here people always lie about numbers, I’m trying to make a blog now and I hope to do a transparent work just like yours!

  • RedLadyMoon

Wow, this is the first of these I’ve ever looked at. Thank you for the transparency. Its very helpful. I’m going to go back and look at your start to see how things have changed. I’m hoping to see some decision making and explanations about why you chose to do certain things or use certain services. But even if that’s not included in previous posts, this other information is very helpful. So thank you.

  • ilovetips_maria

Thank you so much for sharing your way! It is so rare and really inspiring, as all the rest you do in your blog!
