InCoWriMo, 2017

InCoWriMo 2017

Short for International Correspondence Writing Month, InCoWriMo (with an obvious nod to NaNoWriMo) is a writing challenge geared towards bringing back the love of the handwritten letter.

The goal during the InCoWriMo challenge is to hand-write and mail/deliver one letter, card, note, or postcard every day during the month of February.

Have you heard about InCoWriMo? It's a challenge run every February to help spread the love of handwritten letters. Won't you join us?
Yes, Kim and Brian are happy to share their addresses… and yes, they would both LOVE to receive letters from you during InCoWriMo! ;)

Last year I participated in InCoWriMo for the first time. Writing a letter each and every day during the month of February was indeed quite a challenge, but also a rewarding one!

I’m looking forward to participating again this year, and I even have some fun goodies and resources (including an awesome giveaway!) for you at the end of this post if you’d like to play along!

But first let’s take a look at the how, shall we?

Have you heard about InCoWriMo? It's a challenge run every February to help spread the love of handwritten letters. Won't you join us?

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

>> Step 1

According to Eric over at InCoWroMo.org, you should first recite this pledge:

“I, [insert your name], clearly see the benefits of InCoWriMo participation, not only to me personally, but also to those who will receive my correspondence. InCoWriMo is a beneficial endeavor and worthy of my full attention. I hereby pledge to hand-write and mail/deliver one letter, card, note or postcard every day during the month of February.”

>> Step 2

Hand-write and mail/deliver one card or letter each day throughout the month of February. That’s 28 letters :)

>> Extra Credit

Snap some photos of the letters you send and receive and share them on social media. Consider using the hashtags #InCoWriMo and #InCoWriMo2017 so that we can all follow along!

NOT SURE WHO TO WRITE TO?

Maybe you’d even like to gain a pen pal or two throughout the month?

Here are my go-to sites to find new pen pals:

PostCrossing – Send and receive postcards from all over the world.

Fountain Pen Pals – A pen pal group for fountain pen enthusiasts on Reddit.

Letter Writers Alliance – A paid membership group but oh-so-cool!

Bullet Journal Pen Pals – A pen pal group on Facebook for Bullet Journal lovers!

Need some letter writing inspiration?

I’ve created an InCoWriMo board on Pinterest filled with lovely letter-writing and envelope decorating ideas:

Follow Boho Berry | Boho Life |’s board | InCoWriMo | on Pinterest.

InCoWriMo MailOf course, I’d love it if you’d write to me too!

(Depending on how many letters I receive, I can’t promise that I’ll be able to respond to each and every one, but I’ll sure try!)

PS – Even if you’re catching this post after InCoWriMo has ended,
I absolutely LOVE receiving mail all year round ;)

As promised, I have a couple of extra goodies up my sleeve for you this year!

First up, is this InCoWriMo Tracker printable.

I found this extremely useful and fun to update as the challenge progressed last year, and I hope that you will too. Normally my printables are only available to Boho Berry Tribe Members, but I’ve decided to make this one available with just one click :)

  • I wish I could write as beautifully as some of those examples you shared.
The only issue with sending handwritten letters from South Africa, is that the recipient would probably only receive them a year later if at all (our postal service is not renowned for its speed or reliability) :D

  • Awesome. I loved this last year and one of my goals for 2017 is to cultivate relationships. I’m all over this! Also, big shout out to the Goulet Pen folks. They are always so thoughtful and generous. Love them.

  • EEEEK this is my first year doing InCoWriMo and I’m SO EXCITED. I love that tracker–will definitely be printing it out to use next month. Thank you!

  • I’m joining in with InCoWriMo this year and can’t wait to get started :)

  • Empress Syren

I printed the tracker since I’m going to try to participate this year. I’m a little confused about the “contents” section though. Is that if you send stickers or washi tape?

  • Lynne Guerne

I am so excited to participate in this. I didn’t know this existed before today, so thank you Kara for sharing it with us. I am looking forward to diving more into the address resources and lists you provided, and I really appreciate the tracker you created. I’m new to the bullet journal community, and I really love your stuff!!

  • Kitty Bastein

I love this idea, I am going to join InCoWriMo this year for the fist time. I am really excited!

  • Cosima Kafka

I hope I can make at least a few letters happen during inCoWriMo! Thank you to you and GouletPens for the stunning giveaway. I’m in love wit the first set – blue is my color. The Aquamrine set is lovely too, but I already have a bottle of the ink, as does my husband so I wouldn’t want to prevent someone else from trying the ink!

  • Julie Cole

Yea! This is awesome! I’m already making a list of people to send cards / letters to!

  • Yay! I love Goulet Pens, and I’m looking forward to participating in InCoWriMo for the first time this year. Lots of Postcrossing cards will undoubtedly be sent, along with some actual letters as well! Thanks for sharing this printable as well, Kara. I was just about to make up a spreadsheet, but this one is way cuter than anything I could make. :D

  • Jen Keyes

I also have a question about your printable. What did you intend to go in the received column?

  • Christine Lockwood

I would love to participate, but I’m leaving in the middle of February to go to Australia for six months to a year. Since I’ll be on a plane for about a day (with connections), any suggestions of how to keep up with this? I’m also not sure how things will go once I’m in Australia or how soon I’ll be able to take it back up, again…

    • Lauren Swanson

You can always leave a handwritten note in the airport for someone to find, or to a random person on the plane. Maybe a postcard or quick “hope you have a great day” type of thing.

      • Christine Lockwood

        Thanks! :-)

  • Sharon

I am so excited to participate in this challenge! I do have a quick question though. Do you think you could make a similar tracker for pen pals? I have so many coming and going I don’t have room in my bullet journal to keep track of them all! Thanks!!

  • Heather Alexander

I am really excited to do this! I think I’ll get my kiddos involved, too! Thanks, Kara! Congrats to winners of Goulet Pens giveaway. :D

  • Magan Lakeway

Snail stickersfor our envelopes, anybody? What fun!

Can you explain the last column in the tracker? Thanks!

    • Holly Lin

I’d like to know that, too.

    • Holly Lin

I’m not even sure what goes in the received column.

  • kap65

Was given a link to this post by a pen pal I “met” in 2016. I sent out so many Christmas cards, that I seemed to have lost my mojo this month. I make my own note cards, so I will definitely have fun with this challenge in February!

Hi Kara, just an FYI but your blog post notifications aren’t going out when you write them. I just got this one today, Friday, Jan 27, too late to enter the drawing.

I’m curious where you guys are going to pick your recipients. Several of the links given? Are you including people you know on your list? And is it ok to write a letter each day and send them all at the end of the month, or do we have to mail one each day? Also, if you’re writing to people you don’t know, what do you write about? I have no clue, lol.
