16 Before 2016 – Let’s Break Down Those Goals!

16 Before 2016

The response to my 16 Before 2016 Challenge has been SO overwhelming that I just knew I had to do a little follow-up post for you all this week. In fact, I’ll be doing a series of follow-ups throughout the end of the year as I tackle this list.

If you’re not quite sure what I’m talking about, head on over to Why Fall is a Great Time for Review + Goal Setting. To make a long story short though, 16 Before 2016 is a challenge put forth by my favorite creative business coach, Lisa Jacobs.

As soon as I read Lisa’s 16 Before 2016 Challenge, I knew that I had to get started on my own list right away. As always, Lisa’s prompts were thought-provoking and insightful:

  • Consider what you need to clear out of the way before you can really get to work on next year’s big goals.
  • What unfinished business needs attended to so you can end this year with a clean slate?
  • Which projects need more research, or simply let go of, so you can make room for more of what you want to enter your life?
  • What or whom do you need to say “no” to right now?
  • Which people, activities and events do you want to be present for with the rest of 2015?
  • What would have to happen in this last quarter to make 2015 feel like an absolute success?

16 Before 2016: A Goal-Setting Challenge

MY 16 BEFORE 2016:

I know that you’ve already seen my list, but I wanted to break it down a little further and show you how I am actually tackling it. It is so easy to make lists and forget about them. The key to actually achieving your goals is in the follow-through.

Although I had been keeping this list at the forefront of my mind for the past couple of weeks, I hadn’t actually sat down and thought of each task individually. Not until my good friend Kim (TinyRayofSunshine) left this comment on my blog:

Comment

Now, some of these goals don’t merit an entire collection in my Bullet Journal. They are simple one-off tasks that simply require one action step on my part. For the “big” goals however, I found Kim’s advice invaluable! I still have a few collections to set up, but I’m tackling the first few right away :) So, without further ado, here is my 16 Before 2016!

>> 1. COMPLETE & PUBLISH MY COLORING BOOK

16 Before 2016: A Goal-Setting Challenge

This one is a HUGE goal of mine. I have been completely blown away by the outpouring of love for my coloring page designs lately.

Although I’ve already collaborated with some other artists on the 2016 Color Lover’s Weekly Coloring Calendar, I still want to put out my own coloring book before the end of the year.

As you can see, I have a LOT of ideas on how I want to make this happen. Putting them all to paper has helped me to really visualize the scope of this project. I’ve even come up with some “out-of-the-box” ways to deliver it ;)

>> 2. DO A GIVEAWAY ON THE BLOG

This one will have it’s very own spread in my Bullet Journal very soon. I’ve been wanting to give back to my readers and the amazing planner community for some time now, and I’m planning something that I know you will LOVE before the end of the year!

>> 3. JOIN A YOGA STUDIO & ATTEND 3X/WEEK

I have been doing yoga at home for a few months now, but I feel like joining an actual studio will help me to achieve my yogi dreams much more quickly. I’ve been doing my research and have found the perfect studio… now I just need to get my butt in gear!

>> 4. WEEKEND GETAWAY WITH MARK

New Orleans 2015

Here’s one that I can happily say I have already completed! We had SUCH a blast in the beautiful city of New Orleans this past weekend! We fell in love with the city, it’s quirkiness, the people, and of course the food. Oh, and we picked up some cool new hats along the way. A perfect weekend if you ask me ;)

>> 5. SCHEDULE & PERFORM A YEAR-END REVIEW

In addition to follow-through, one of the main ways to make sure you are achieving your goals is by reviewing them. Around this time each year, I like to perform a year-end review. During this process I go review what has worked well for me, what surprised me, what I might like to change, and how I can improve during the year to come.

I have my year-end review scheduled for November 30th, and I’m excited to dive in with the help of my “Your Best Year 2016” workbook by the amazing Lisa Jacobs. (More on that below)

>> 6. PITCH GUEST POSTS TO MY “TOP 3”

16 Before 2016: A Goal-Setting ChallengeThis is something that has been on my list for a few months now. With everything that has been going on here at Boho Berry these past few months, it keeps getting shoved to the side. Honestly, I’m sick of putting it off!

So of course, into my trusty Bullet Journal it goes! This is where I’ll be brainstorming ideas and tracking my progress.

My “top 3” are sites that I feel really mesh well with what I’m all about here at Boho Berry. All 3 are sites that focus on creating a better life through health & fitness, mindfulness, meditation, and goal setting.

>> 7. CREATE 5 NEW MALAS FOR THE SHOP

16 Before 2016: A Goal-Setting ChallengeI realize that a lot of you may not be aware because I don’t talk about it much anymore, but Boho Berry came into existence when I opened my Etsy shop back in April.

My top sellers are my 108 Bead Mala necklaces, used as a meditation tool, and as a beautiful way to wear your intentions throughout the day. What are Mala Beads?

I’ve been meaning to expand my line of Malas, and I have some great ideas to really hone in on their meaning. If you’re into meditation and setting intentions, then stay tuned. There’s some pretty cool stuff coming down the pipeline :)

>> 8. KONMARI: BOOKS & PAPERWORK

The next step in my KonMari adventure is to get through my books and paperwork. I’ve been slacking on getting started because I have so many books and such a huge stack of paperwork that it is a bit daunting.

This had  to go on my list though, because I have truly seen the benefits of the KonMari method. My bedroom is an oasis of calm right now due to Marie Kondo’s book, and I can’t wait for the rest of my house to follow suit.

>> 9. PLAN A FUN FAMILY TRIP AROUND CHRISTMAS

This year will be the first time we have brought Bella out to New Jersey for Christmas. Normally we head back home so that we can spend time with family and friends, but this year it is just not feasible with Mark’s work schedule.

So, we’re planning a fun little getaway while Bella is here to see some Christmasy sights in our neck of the woods. Right now we’re thinking New York City is our plan… Rockefeller Center at Christmas! :)

>> 10. GET IN THAT GYM HABIT NOW

With the weather turning colder, I have found myself becoming less and less active. Over the past couple of months I have been outside walking the dog, running, and exploring. But now I find myself in need of an indoor space to stay active and not lose my mojo.

Luckily I have free access to the gym on base, so starting this week I’ll be committed to going and getting in the habit before the new year.

>> 11. GET MY PASSPORT (EUROPE, BABY!)

Europe 2016

Have I mentioned that I’m planning a mega-trip to Europe next Spring? Yup! I’ll be packing up a few things in a backpack and heading off on a 2 month solo-trip throughout western Europe in May and I couldn’t be more excited! Step #1? Get that dang passport!

P.S. You can definitely expect some exciting blog posts leading up to my journey ;)

>> 12. KONMARI: KITCHEN CABINETS//PANTRY

Yet another KonMari item on my list. This is just a small part of the dreaded “Miscellaneous” category. My kitchen cabinets and pantry are a disaster, and I can’t wait to get them organized once and for all!

>> 13. CREATE AN AWESOME OPT-IN FREEBIE

This is another item that has been on my to-do list. Pretty much since I started my blog. I’ve been going back and forth on what this freebie will be, but I do know that I want it to be an epic value… all absolutely free to you!

>> 14. PAMPER MYSELF – DAY @ THE SPA

I’m gonna let you in on a little secret. Running my Etsy shop, creating content for this blog, being active on social media, and creating my own products… all while working a part-time job on top of that? It’s exhausting!

I often find it hard to make time for myself when I have so  much other stuff that needs to get done. So, I added this spa day to my list as a way to force myself to take care of myself along the way :)

>> 15. TAKE AN ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR COURSE

I’ve found that the best software to digitize my artwork in Adobe Illustrator. Although I’ve learned the basics already, I know that there is so much more that this program can do! As an aspiring artist, taking a course and actually learning Adobe Illustrator inside and out is something that I think will help me immensely.

>> 16. END 2015 STRONG!

16 Before 2016: A Goal-Setting Challenge“Finish 2015 Strong” is a pretty vague concept when you think about it. So, I decided to make this spread to spell out what that means to me. I love having this visual in my Bullet Journal.

I broke it down into 5 areas of my life and added bullet points for my “top 3” in each area. You’ll notice that most of these coincide with the rest of my 16 Before 2016 list. That is purely intentional.

>> If you have created your own 16 Before 2016 list, I’d love to hear from you! Feel free to link up your blog posts in the comments below. How are YOU going to finish 2015 strong?

“Have you ever wondered how far you would go if you fully committed to your plans and followed through on your big ideas? It’s all too easy to take a slow month at a slow pace, disgruntled by a lack of results and income. But what if instead you invested a year to giving it your all with a specific outline of business wins and rewards? That’s what Your Best Year 2016 is all about.”

DELICIOUS!! I had no idea that Euro-trip was a solo one – amazing! I can hardly wait to follow along. I lived in Brussels for three years and enjoyed a lot of the areas you’ll visit. You’re going to love it! SO. EXCITING. Seriously, 2016’s going to be a banner year for us all. I can feel it.

    • Thanks Lisa! I’ve been wanting to go on a solo adventure forEVer! It’s going to be exciting (if not a little scary) for sure! :)

You’re so right about 2016, it’s going to be a great one :)

      • I was just about to comment and say that I’ve started working through Lisa’s book and am loving it, and then I see that SHE’S COMMENTED HERE! Amazing! Lisa, I love your book (and have RSS’d your blog)! Bought it on Kara’s recommendation. I spent about 3 hours working through the first part of it the other night and was amazed at some of the stuff that I spotted — recurring problems, overall themes, repeated goals… It’s really helping me focus on small actions and changes, while still seeing the bigger picture. So thank you Lisa for sharing this great workbook, and thank you Kara for bringing it to my attention. =)

P.S. Kara, Florence and Rome are incredible. Great choices! Venice is also beautiful but I would say that 2 days is probably plenty because it’s quite small. Maybe add an extra day or two somewhere else instead. =)

  • This is an awesome breakdown, Kara! I’m happy that my words could come through so strongly. I’m sure you’ll make progress in your goals and then some! Making some of them into a top 3 spread is a beautiful way to keep your goals in mind and make sure you review them constantly. I print out copies of some of my spreads and place them on my wall to remind me of goals or steps I’m trying to achieve in some area of my life as a way to keep them in mind a la vision boards – hey that’s an idea for another article (; Keep up the awesome work! Excited to see how all of your goals pan out – especially your beautiful coloring book!

  • So cool! While I’ve not done ANYthing with goals and plans and such this year, I’m definitely working on 2016 looking quite a bit different. I got my new planner this week and have been watching a few videos on some different ideas, as well as reading Leo Babauta’s “The Power of Less,” and have begun implementing some of his principles in addition to prepping and planning for 2016. I’m amazing at creating a system…not so much at maintaining it, so I think Leo’s input will be a big help. The other challenge is not being overwhelmed by ALL the wonderful information and ideas out there. They all seem helpful, but I have to keep reminding myself that I can’t do them all. I need to just pick what will truly help me to simplify and systemize things, as well as create goals that make sense for me.

  • OK Kara, I first saw the yoga studio and thought it said attend 8x a week and I was like NO HONEY DON’T DO THAT TO YOURSELF! :) 3x is much more doable. Hee hee. Found this blog, then found my way to the FB group where a bunch of my Erin Condren friends were already members. Cool ideas, you’re an inspiration. :) I’m new to the bullet journaling thing but hey, give me an excuse to make lists and I’ll run with it. See ya around!

  • I live in the UK so have been to London at least once if not twice (in some cases 3 or 4 times!) a year. I’ve been to Edinburgh and we went to Amsterdam for our Honeymoon so if you need any suggestions let me know! Oh and also tips like getting a travel card or Oyster card in London or where to get a travel card in Amsterdam for the trams rather than paying singular fares. and places to eat like Wok to Walk in Amsterdam and Cafe Eterno in London.

    • I love that, Hannah! I’ll definitely hit you up for some good advice while I’m there :)

      • I totally only just saw this reply – of course just let me know and I’ll send you a whole guide hehe

  • Katrina Romanoff

I’ve always been wary of goals. I think what it is is that whenever I am supposed to write down my goals, it’s been for school, not for me. Therefore I was always concerned about being judged. This year, so it seems, I’m finally getting over that. 2016 is (hopefully) going to be a great year. I should be graduating from college in the spring. So, I thought it would be make sense for me to separate my goals as “Pre-Graduation” and “Post Graduation” . Then I have another page with miscellaneous goals (mostly they’re goals I don’t believe I can accomplish in the next year.) –Thanks for inspiring me to get my goals together!

  • Stephanie

I really like this idea – I have some things that have been nagging at me and I’d love to have them done by next year. However, knowing myself I think I should cut the number of goals down so it will be realistic for the amount of time left in the year!

    • I think with just 15 days left in the month, either a shorter list might work… or even a list of 16 super-easy things to complete? You could even do a 16 FOR 2016 list of big goals for the year to come :)

  • Linda van der Hoek

Kara! I miss the gorgeous city of Copenhagen on your list! Have always wanted to go, and went last June. It’s dropdead gorgeous and it has such a beautiful flowy vibe! I’m sure you’d love it… you háve to go there! ;)

    • Oooh, Copenhagen is definitely on my radar! So many beautiful cities and so little time! :)

      • And Stockholm! Come visit here, you’ll love it! :)

        • I’m starting to think I should just make a new route based on the suggestions I’ve been getting and just couch surf my way through Europe visiting all of my lovely readers along the way haha!

        • Well, Kara, I know it is a hard decision: So little time, so many beautiful places. But really, don’ leave out Berlin! :D

          • Oh I know! Thank Julia… I’ve moved my trip back to 2017 (some scheduling issues + more time to plan). Berlin is definitely on my short list :)

hey kara, i’m going through old posts (here and elsewhere) as a way to “pre-plan” before 2017, even though i’m already an active bujo-er.
are you going to do one of these for 2017?
